Image Readout

The circuit in Figure 3 measures the voltage at each pixel.  It is read out sequentially, then converted to a digital number by the analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) [1] at the bottom-right:

By reading the voltages at each pixel, we can form a complete digital image like the one in Figure 4.  Each number in the digital image represents the brightness of one of the pixels.   0 represents black, 255 represents white, and numbers in between represent various shades of gray.
