Remove Image Noise

Noise

Photos captured using digital cameras usually have undesirable random variations in brightness or color information.  This variation is often referred to as image noise.  The noise is most apparent in under-exposed images or regions with low brightness level.  For example, photo (a) has significant color and brightness variations, which lower the photo’s quality. Click on the image to view it at a higher resolution.  Therefore it becomes necessary to "clean-up" some of this noise in order to increase the quality.

Photo (b) is the processed photo where only the brightness noise has been reduced using the Bigshot software.  Notice that random variations in color is still visible.  On the other hand, in Photo (c) only the color noise has been reduced.  Here you can still notice random brightness variations.  Finally, in Photo (d), both brightness and color noise have been reduced.

Observe that denoising tends to blur the photos. So be judicious when deciding how much denoising you want to apply.  Click here to learn more about image noise.
